Slovakia has prepared a preliminary balance of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the year 2024, based on the national methodology and input from sectoral experts. The results confirm a continuing downward trend in emissions, observed also in previous years. Compared to 2023, total emissions (excluding removals from forests and other land) decreased significantly by 7.4%, reaching a level of 33,419.13 Gg of CO₂ equivalent.
After accounting for carbon removals from forests and land, net GHG emissions amounted to 27,961 Gg of CO₂ equivalent, representing a decrease of only 1.2% compared to the previous year. Unfortunately, this also indicates a decline in the carbon sink capacity between 2023 and 2024.
The overall reduction was mainly driven by the energy and industrial sectors. Emission decreases were also recorded in certain industrial processes, such as aluminium production. Preliminary estimates further suggest that the decline in transport emissions observed in 2023 was not merely a temporary fluctuation but may indicate the beginning of a longer-term shift in trends.
Agriculture remains the only sector where emissions continue to rise.
Final GHG emission data for 2024, with an expected accuracy of ±2%, will be available in early 2026.
