Based on the national methodology and sectoral experts, Slovakia prepared a preliminary (proxy) balance of GHG emissions for 2023, confirming a declining trend in emissions from the previous year. Year-on-year, emissions decreased by 0.6% (2022-2023), excluding carbon sinks in forests and other land use categories, totalling 36,786 Gg CO2 equivalents. Including LULUCF, greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 are 2.5% lower, reaching 29,072 Gg CO2 equivalents.
The decrease in greenhouse gas emissions was particularly significant in the energy and industry sectors, due to the energy crisis and rising fuel and energy prices primarily caused by the war in Ukraine. Emissions from steel and iron production decreased, as did emissions from lignite-based electricity production and certain industrial processes (e.g., aluminium production).
As every year, the high consumption of motor fuels, especially gasoline, in road transport led to an increase in road transport emissions.
Final emission figures for 2023, with an accuracy of ±2%, will be known in early 2025.
