Based on national methodology and inputs from sectoral experts, Slovakia has prepared a preliminary emissions balance for 2025; this balance ended declining emissions trend observed in previous years. Total greenhouse gas emissions (excluding LULUCF removals) increased by more than one percent (1.13%), whereas total emissions including LULUCF removals decreased by just under two percent (1.86%) compared to verified emissions for 2024.
Consequently, total greenhouse gas emissions for 2025 preliminarily stand at 34 255.57 Gg CO2 equivalent (excluding removals), while removals amount to 5 910.97 Gg CO2 equivalent.
The increase in greenhouse gas emissions was particularly recorded in sectors and categories not included the Emissions Trading Scheme, reflecting insufficient effort in formulating policies and measures to reduce emissions in areas such as household heating, agriculture, waste management, and transport.
As is the case every year, a sharp increase in motor fuel consumption in road transport once again drove up emissions from that sector.
Final emission figures for 2025, with an accuracy of ±2%, will be available in early 2027.
