Slovakia prepared its proxy emission inventory of greenhouse gases for 2021

Regulation(EU) 2018/1999 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action, in Article 26(2) requires the member states of the European Union to publish their projected greenhouse gas emissions for the previous year by July 31st of the following year at the latest.

Slovakia prepared its proxy emission inventory of greenhouse gases for 2021

Based on national methodologies and sector experts, Slovakia prepared a proxy inventory of emissions for the year 2021. This balance did not confirm the decliningd trend of emissions from the previous year. Year-on-year emissions increased by more than 10% (2020-2021).

The increase in greenhouse gas emissions was caused by several factors, i.e. the restoration of operation of the blast furnace in the U.S. Steel, a.s. Košice, which was shut down in previous years due to reconstruction. There was also a high increase in the consumption of motor fuels and mainly diesel oil in road transport. The high growth in transport, partially reduced by the Covid pandemic, seems to be gone and the trend has returned to its original rising trajectory. We will see whether the current high energy and fuel prices will change the emissions, but this will be seen only next year.

The final emissions for 2021, with an accuracy of ±2%, will be known in early 2023.
